Tyruliai swamp is the largest exploited wetland complex in the country with what was once the largest bog in the country. Currently, in different parts of the former peatland, there are more than 30 bird species listed in the Lithuanian Red Book, of which 24 are breeding.
Tyruliai swamp is a unique complex of wetland ecosystems in Lithuania, the area of which is second only to the territories of Čepkeliai and Žuvintas wetlands. This is the largest exploited marsh massif in Lithuania, with what was once the country's largest lowland marsh. The total area of the former wetlands occupies about 4 thousand. 700 ha, and 3 thousand were used for peat mining. 773 ha. Despite several decades of intensive peat extraction, the conservation value of this area has remained high even today. In the now unused parts of the peatland, processes of bog renaturalization are being observed, so it is expected that the implementation of targeted nature management activities, such as the formation of open habitats, the restoration of the hydrological regime and the removal of woody vegetation, will accelerate the recovery of various bog habitats.
The Tyruliai LIFE project was carried out for four years https://www.tyruliai-life.lt/
